MARATHON'S OLDEST FISHING TOURNAMENT IS SET FOR SEPT. 25-28

MARATHON, Florida Keys - Marking its 44th year, the Marathon International Bonefish Tournament kicks off Thursday, Sept. 25, with three days of fishing, Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28, as competitors return year after year to either fish from boats or wade from shore.

Registration begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Sombrero Country Club, 4000 Sombrero Blvd. in Marathon, followed by a cocktail party. Contestants fish for bonefish using fly tackle, spin and artificial lures for the next three days with lines in at 8:30 a.m. and lines out at 3:30 p.m. Cocktail parties at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the country club give anglers an opportunity to trade fish tales.

The awards dinner Sunday begins with a cocktail party at 6:30 p.m. with dinner slated at 7:30 at the country club. Twenty-one awards in the all-release tournament are to be presented to individuals and teams, and range from overall champion to the Wet Pants trophy for the best catch by a wading angler. Juniors under 16 are eligible for four awards as well.

Entry fee is $175 and social passes are $75.

For event information, call tournament chairperson Lindsay Rabito at 305-743-9424. To find out about area accommodations, call the Marathon Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-743-9580, 305-743-5417 or explore the Web site.
