WOMEN'S SAILFISH COMPETITION SET FOR FEB. 6-8

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys - Female anglers have a chance to compete against each other during the Islamorada Women's Sailfish Tournament set for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 6-8. Headquartered at the Holiday Isle Resorts and Marina, mile marker 84 oceanside in Islamorada, the tournament awards merchandise prizes to the female anglers who catch and release the most sailfish.

A unique feature of the tournament is the Captains Shuffle, in which the captain gets to fish for bragging rights Saturday, Feb. 7, 3:35 -4:35 p.m., while the angler becomes the mate and the mate captains the boat.

Pre-registration for the Womens Sailfish Tournament is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Holiday Isle. A cocktail party and hors doeuvres follow at 6 p.m.

Lines are to be in the water beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and lines out is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. A 7:15 p.m. awards dinner is to follow Sundays fishing.

Begun in 1984, the Women's Sailfish Tournament has a long and colorful history. During the 2002 event, Lynn Brodie of Islamorada caught an astounding 17 fish to win the overall championship as well as the high-point angler award.

Entry fee is $250 for the first angler on a boat and $200 for each additional angler. The tournament benefits Monroe County Rural Health Networks Medi-Van, which offers free or reduced-priced medical care on wheels to people in need.
