ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys - Each angler uses one lure and fishes until he or she loses it. That's the premise behind the 10th annual Backbone Lures' Fish 'Til You Lose It tournament slated for Saturday, March 6.
Anglers choose from an assortment of Backbone Skimmer Series Jigs, using spin- or bait-casting tackle to catch bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, redfish, trout, jack crevalles, sharks, ladyfish and barracudas in the day-long effort. Points are accumulated for fish landed, photographed and released, and an angler stops fishing when his or her lure is lost or rendered unusable.
The competition kicks off with a 6 p.m. party Friday, March 5, at the Ocean View Lounge at mile marker (MM) 84.5 bayside in Islamorada.
Saturday, anglers are to check in and out of Papa Joe's Marina, MM 80 bayside, with lines in the water at 7 a.m. and lines out at 3 p.m. Anglers are required to return to the dock by 4:30 p.m. A casual awards barbecue at the Ocean View Lounge is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Awards go to both guided and unguided champions who earn the most points. The team champion, fishing guide champion, kids' champion and womens champion also are to receive awards.
The entry fee is $75 per angler when prepaid or $85 on the day of the tournament. Proceeds benefit the Florida Keys Children's Shelter.
